Syria's transitional government plans to integrate defected officers into military
Head of the Syrian transitional government Mohammed al-Bashir has said that the new Syrian authorities plan to reorganise the Defence Ministry by integrating members of the opposition groups that came to power, as well as defected officers from the former army.
"The Defence Ministry will be restructured by including revolutionaries and defected officers from the ousted regime," he stated, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
In late November, the armed Syrian opposition launched the largest offensive since 2020 in the northern part of the country. They seized control of Aleppo, the Kuweires Military Airbase, and Deir ez-Zor.
On December 8, the rebels entered Damascus and declared the overthrow of the country's leader, Bashar al-Assad. The president left office and, together with his family, fled the country, seeking asylum in Russia. Before departing, he instructed for a peaceful transfer of power. On December 10, a transitional government was formed in Syria, headed by Mohammed al-Bashir. Since the change of power, Syrian territory has been subjected to regular airstrikes by the Israeli Air Force. By December 10, reports indicated that Israeli forces had targeted over 250 military sites across the country. Leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham Ahmed al-Sharaa called on the international community to intervene and halt the Israeli escalation.
