UK monarch to visit Washington in first state trip since 2007
King Charles III and Queen Camilla are set to meet US President Donald Trump in late April, as Buckingham Palace has confirmed an upcoming state visit to the United States, as per British media.
The visit, which has been anticipated for some time, will be carried out on behalf of the UK government. An official announcement had appeared to be delayed amid political tensions related to the war involving Iran.
According to Buckingham Palace, the trip will include a stop in Washington, DC, marking the first UK state visit to the United States since Queen Elizabeth II’s visit in 2007. The itinerary will feature a state dinner at the White House, and King Charles III is also expected to deliver an address to Congress.
Following the US visit, the King will travel to Bermuda, a British Overseas Territory in the North Atlantic, on his return journey.
The visit comes as the United States marks the 250th anniversary of its independence this year, which is expected to be a central theme of the trip. Buckingham Palace said the visit will “celebrate the historic connections and the modern bilateral relationship” between the two countries.
The statement notes that Charles III will then travel to Bermuda. This will be his first visit to a British overseas territory as monarch. A detailed itinerary for both trips will be announced at a later date, Buckingham Palace added.
