Iraq declares readiness to facilitate return of refugees to countries of origin
Iraq’s National Security Advisor, Qasim Al-Araji, confirmed on March 31 that the Iraqi government is fully prepared to cooperate in the file of returning refugees residing in Iraq to their countries of origin.
Al-Araji met with Tony Harwood, Director of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office in Iraq, to review UNHCR's overall work in the country and discuss ways to sustain cooperation between the Iraqi government and the agency, according to a statement issued by the media office of the National Security Advisor and received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
He stressed the importance of handling the refugee and displaced persons issue with a humanitarian approach, highlighting the government’s full readiness to facilitate the return of refugees to their countries of origin in line with international law and the principle of voluntary return.
Al-Araji also highlighted Iraq’s major efforts in repatriating families from Al-Hol camp, supporting their rehabilitation, and ensuring their reintegration into society.
He added that the government will work with UNHCR and the Ministries of Interior, Migration and Displacement to develop a comprehensive emergency plan for setting up dedicated refugee camps.
Harwood, for his part, praised the strong cooperation between the two sides, reaffirming UNHCR’s support for voluntary returns and its efforts to find sustainable solutions to the refugee issue.
