Tasnim: Shipowners can now register passage via Strait of Hormuz online
Shipowners and ship captains worldwide can now submit requests at any time to transit the Strait of Hormuz via Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) online system, according to the Iranian news agency Tasnim.
The Persian Gulf Strait Authority is a recently established Iranian governmental body created to regulate maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints. It was formed as part of Tehran’s efforts to centralise and formalise vessel authorisation procedures, replacing previously fragmented or informal transit arrangements.
The authority is responsible for processing vessel applications, issuing passage permissions, and coordinating with Iranian maritime and security institutions for transit oversight.
Last month, the US Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions on the authority as part of a campaign described by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent as “Economic Fury,” aimed at Iran’s oil exports and transport networks.
