Tbilisi welcomes Germany’s move to recall envoy amid diplomatic tensions
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has called Germany’s decision to recall its ambassador, Peter Fischer, a “correct and pragmatic” step.
He said that Fischer’s presence in Georgia had been counterproductive for Germany, Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media.
“No ambassador has harmed Georgian-German relations so much. What his predecessors had been building for 30 years, Fischer practically destroyed. When the new ambassador arrives, we will be absolutely open to cooperation with him,” the PM stated.
Relations between Georgia and Germany have sharply deteriorated in recent months, culminating in Berlin’s decision to recall ambassador Peter Fischer on October 19 2025, for consultations.
German officials said the recall was prompted by what they described as sustained agitation by the Georgian leadership against German and EU representation.
Fischer had previously been summoned by Tbilisi’s Foreign Ministry after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze accused him of interfering in internal affairs and supporting the opposition—a charge Berlin rejected as unfounded.
