Tehran, Ankara plan to deepen energy cooperation, says Iran's FM
Iran has expressed its willingness to extend the current natural gas supply contract with Turkey and emphasised the need to expand bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said.
Speaking at a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan, Araghchi described Iran as “one of the most reliable energy suppliers for Türkiye” and reiterated Tehran’s readiness to prolong the existing gas contract while also exploring opportunities in electricity cooperation, Mehr reports.
Araghchi noted that Iran and Türkiye have yet to fully tap the potential of their bilateral collaboration, particularly in trade and economic relations. He highlighted the importance of removing trade and investment barriers to bridge this gap and enhance cooperation between the two countries.
The current gas contract delivers 10 billion cubic meters of Iranian gas to Türkiye annually and is set to expire in November 2026.
According to Iranian media reports, discussions are ongoing regarding the terms and duration of the next agreement.
