Terror threat in Serbia prompts suspension of train services
Train services in Serbia were suspended due to a terror threat on the eve of the anniversary of the Novi Sad tragedy.
The announcement came from Srbija Voz, the company responsible for Serbia’s railways, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
The company stated that it had received an anonymous call warning of explosive devices on trains and railway infrastructure.
“We are compelled to temporarily halt the operation of all trains to ensure the safety of passengers and train crews,” the statement read.
Danas reported that tickets could not be purchased from station vending machines and that trains were not operating “for security reasons.” Some passengers were reportedly asked to disembark at intermediate stations.
One year ago, on November 1, 2024, the canopy of the train station in the Serbian town of Novi Sad collapsed, killing 16 people.
The Novi Sad train station was renovated shortly before the collapse in 2024 — by a Chinese company. Citizens soon blamed the tragedy on corruption within Serbian political elites.
Following 12 months of rolling protests, students are planning a commemoration protest in Novi Sad for the victims.
The biggest protests in Serbian history followed in the days after the disaster, lasting for weeks and months. Students, especially from Novi Sad itself, led the protests but were soon supported by a wider public.
