Thousands mourn as Pope Francis buried among Rome’s sacred icons PHOTO

26 April 2025 17:36

In a solemn and intimate ceremony, the 266th Pope, Francis, was laid to rest today, April 26, in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major (Santa Maria Maggiore) in Rome. The burial was attended by a small, select group that included several cardinals, honouring the Pope's personal wish for a simple farewell.

The Vatican’s press office, cited by foreign media, confirmed the details of the ceremony, per Caliber.Az.

Ahead of the burial, photographs of the Pope’s final resting place were released: a simple marble slab bearing the Latin inscription "Franciscus."

During his lifetime, Pope Francis personally chose his burial site — a niche between the Sforza Chapel and the Pauline Chapel, named after Pope Paul V Borghese, who is also interred there. The Pauline Chapel is home to the venerated icon of the Madonna, Protector of Rome, before which Francis frequently prayed, especially in his final days.

True to his wishes, the coffin was placed beneath the floor of the basilica, reflecting his desire to be buried “in the earth.” In keeping with Catholic tradition, it is also common for coffins to be sealed within the walls of churches.

Pope Francis now becomes the eighth pontiff to be buried in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major — the first since the late 17th century. Although located in Rome, atop the Esquiline Hill, the basilica remains under formal Vatican jurisdiction.

The funeral drew an extraordinary outpouring of mourning and respect. Authorities estimate that around 250,000 people gathered in and around St. Peter’s Square during the service, with an additional 150,000 lining the streets of Rome to pay their respects as the funeral procession made its way from the Vatican to the burial site.

Rome’s security measures were unprecedented. The city centre was completely sealed off, and military and police helicopters circled overhead. All other air traffic was banned to secure the area during the day’s ceremonies.

According to the Holy See’s press office, starting Sunday morning (April 27), Pope Francis’ grave will be open for public veneration, allowing the faithful to pay tribute to a pontiff who deeply touched the lives of millions.
