Tremor in Polish coal mine kills one, injures eleven
A deadly tremor struck a coal mine in Radlin, southern Poland, on January 27, killing one miner and injuring eleven others.
The incident occurred at 0206 GMT, approximately 800 meters (874 yards) below ground, at a mine owned by the Polish mining group PGG, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
According to a statement from PGG, there were 29 workers in the affected area when the tremor hit. "Eleven of them were taken to hospital. Unfortunately one of our colleagues, one of the miners, died," said Bartosz Kepa, Acting CEO of PGG, during a press conference.
The deceased miner was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lukasz Pach, head of emergency medical services in Katowice, confirmed that four of the injured miners were in serious condition, and they were immediately transported to local hospitals for treatment.
PGG officials are continuing efforts to secure the area affected by the tremor. "An operation to secure the affected area was still underway and material damage at the mine had yet to be assessed," said Marek Skuza, PGG's Deputy CEO for Production.
