Trilateral talks between Russia, Ukraine, US begin in Abu Dhabi
Trilateral negotiations between delegations from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States have started in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Rustem Umerov, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council, announced.
Rustem Umerov, who leads the Ukrainian delegation in the talks, noted that they are working within the clear directives of President Volodymyr Zelensky to achieve a just and lasting peace, Caliber.Az reports.
“The negotiation process has started in a trilateral format — Ukraine, the US, and Russia. This will be followed by work in separate groups on specific areas, after which a joint session to realign positions is planned,” Umerov explained.
The Abu Dhabi meetings build on a US‑mediated peace diplomacy push aimed at finding parameters for ending Russia’s full‑scale invasion of Ukraine, including exploring a ceasefire framework and negotiating core issues like security guarantees and the future separation of forces on the battlefield.
During the first round in late January, delegations discussed potential security monitoring, the formalisation of any peace deal, and conditions for reducing active hostilities, though no breakthrough was reached and major disagreements remained on territorial control.
The second round is expected to continue these dialogues, focusing on narrowing disputes over territory and security guarantees while keeping a diplomatic channel open despite ongoing battlefield violence disrupting talks.
