Tropical storm Trami claims 26 lives, displaces over 300,000 in Philippines
Tropical storm Trami has resulted in the deaths of at least 26 individuals and has forced more than 150,000 residents to evacuate their homes in the Philippines on October 24.
The storm, known locally as severe tropical storm Kristine, made landfall on the northeastern coast, bringing heavy torrential rainfall to the main island of Luzon, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
The intense downpours have led to widespread flooding and landslides across the region.
According to the state weather agency’s 11 a.m. (0300 GMT) bulletin, Trami is currently moving westward with maximum sustained winds of 95 kph across the mountainous northern area of Cordillera, heading towards the South China Sea.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has deployed 908 police personnel in Bicol to provide assistance to the victims of the inclement weather.
State weather bureau PAGASA said Kristine was located in the vicinity of Aguinaldo, Ifugao moving westward at 20 kph with maximum sustained winds of 95 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 115 kph.
The severe tropical storm was expected to cross Northern Luzon over the next 12 hours and may emerge over the waters west of Ilocos Region on October 24 afternoon.
