Trump envoy urges FIFA to replace Iran with Italy in World Cup line-up
A senior envoy to U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed that FIFA replace Iran with Italy in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, he confirmed to the Financial Times.
According to people familiar with the matter, Paolo Zampolli raised the idea with FIFA president Gianni Infantino as well as Trump, whose country is co-hosting the tournament alongside Mexico and Canada. Zampolli argued that Italy’s record of four World Cup titles justified awarding it a place in the competition.
The proposal is also seen as part of a broader effort to repair strained relations between Washington and Rome. Ties between Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have reportedly deteriorated following disagreements linked to the U.S. president’s criticism of Pope Leo XIV over the Iran war.
Tehran has rejected any suggestion it could be excluded. In a statement issued on April 22, Iranian authorities said the country is preparing for the tournament and intends to participate as planned.
The push to include Italy comes after the national team, known as the Azzurri, failed to qualify for the World Cup. A shock play-off defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina triggered widespread criticism at home and led to the resignation of the head of the Italian Football Federation.
“I confirm I have suggested to Trump and Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup. I’m an Italian native and it would be a dream to see the Azzurri at a US-hosted tournament. With four titles, they have the pedigree to justify inclusion,” Zampolli told the Financial Times.
