Trump impeachment looms if Democrats reclaim House, speaker warns
US House Speaker Mike Johnson issued a stark warning on December 22, urging young conservatives to mobilize and prevent Democrats from regaining control of the House in next year’s midterm elections.
Speaking at the annual AmericaFest conference in Phoenix, Arizona, Johnson cautioned that a decisive Republican loss could pave the way for a renewed push by “radical leftists” to impeach President Donald Trump.
“Everything is on the line in the midterms of 2026. And we have much more to do it,” Johnson said.
“But if we lose the House majority, the radical left, as you've already heard, is going to impeach
President Trump. They're going to create absolute chaos. We cannot let that happen,” he added.
The warning comes amid challenging political dynamics for Republicans. Trump’s approval ratings have fallen to their lowest levels since his first term, complicating the party’s outlook heading into the 2026 midterms. A recent poll highlighted by CNN reporter Harry Enten indicated that two-thirds of Americans believe the country is on the “wrong track,” raising concerns about Republican prospects to retain the House of Representatives.
If Democrats succeed in reclaiming the majority, an impeachment motion against Trump could move forward effectively, contingent on the support of most or all House Democrats.
The 2026 US midterm elections are scheduled for November 3, during which all 435 House seats and several Senate seats will be contested, setting the stage for a high-stakes political showdown.
