Trump lifts tariffs on Scottish whisky after royal visit
US President Donald Trump has announced the removal of tariffs and restrictions on imports of Scottish whisky.
He made the statement on his social media platform, Truth Social, following the conclusion of the state visit of King Charles III and Queen Camilla to the White House.
“In Honor of the King and Queen of the United Kingdom, who have just left the White House, soon headed back to their wonderful Country, I will be removing the Tariffs and Restrictions on Whiskey having to do with Scotland’s ability to work with the Commonwealth of Kentucky on Whiskey and Bourbon, two very important Industries within Scotland and Kentucky,” the president said in his statement. He also noted that the King and Queen had convinced him to make this decision “without hardly even asking.”
According to Trump, there had previously been bilateral trade between Scotland and the US state of Kentucky, particularly involving wooden barrels. The president added that it was an honour for the United States to host the British monarch and his spouse.
