Trump orders plan for prolonged blockade of Iran
U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the development of a plan for a prolonged blockade of Iran.
According to The Wall Street Journal, sources familiar with discussions within the U.S. administration confirmed the move.
In recent days, the American leader has backed the idea of further increasing economic pressure on Tehran. This includes measures that could restrict Iranian vessels—including oil tankers—from leaving the country’s ports.
Sources told the newspaper that Washington views a blockade as a less risky option compared to resuming strikes on Iran or fully withdrawing from the conflict.
At the same time, the WSJ reports that there is no unified position within the U.S. administration regarding the future strategy. Some officials support intensifying pressure on Iran, while others warn of potential repercussions for the U.S. economy itself.
Particular concern, the publication notes, centres on the situation around the Strait of Hormuz. Washington fears that any prolonged disruption there or continued escalation could impact global markets, increase inflationary pressures, and complicate the position of the Republican Party ahead of the U.S. midterm congressional elections.
