Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine plans European tour, open to Moscow visit
President-elect Donald Trump's special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, plans to visit Kyiv next month and remains open to travelling to Moscow if invited.
This move is part of the incoming administration’s effort to end the nearly three-year war in Ukraine.
According to an anonymous source familiar with the plans, Kellogg, a retired general who served in national security roles during Trump's first term, also intends to visit London, Paris, and Rome, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media.
The visits, still in the planning stages, are primarily focused on gathering information, not implementing specific policy changes.
Kellogg's willingness to travel to Moscow would be an unprecedented step for a U.S. official, considering the sanctions imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The Trump transition team did not immediately respond to inquiries regarding the trip.
Trump has expressed a desire to swiftly end the war by pressuring both sides to negotiate, although he has not detailed specific policy changes. Kellogg, 80, has publicly supported Trump’s goal of brokering a peace deal. As the new special envoy, Kellogg will need to clarify Trump’s approach to world leaders, particularly those eager to understand how U.S. policy on the conflict might shift.
In recent remarks, Trump has stated he intends to arm Ukraine sufficiently to force Russian President Vladimir Putin into talks but criticized President Joe Biden for allowing Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied missiles to strike targets within Russia. Trump has also threatened to cut off aid to Ukraine if it does not pursue a peace agreement.
At his Mar-a-Lago club on Monday, Trump suggested Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy should be ready to accept territorial losses as part of any peace deal.
“He should be prepared to make a deal, that’s all,” Trump said. “Too many people being killed.”
