Turkish intelligence aids in release of five Thai hostages in Gaza

30 January 2025 19:35

Türkiye's National Intelligence Organization (MIT) has played a pivotal role in securing the release of five Thai hostages held in Gaza, following diplomatic and intelligence efforts conducted in coordination with Hamas, under the directive of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Security sources confirmed that MIT was instrumental in the successful negotiations aimed at securing the hostages' release, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.

These negotiations were part of Türkiye’s broader diplomatic mediation efforts, which involved the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant entities working toward a ceasefire and facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

MIT’s ongoing operations also extended to assisting with the evacuation of Turkish citizens, as well as foreign nationals and injured civilians, from the region amidst the ongoing conflict.

The release of the Thai hostages comes after the January 13, 2025, agreement between Hamas and Israel, which included provisions for the exchange of prisoners and detainees. The agreement marked a significant step in the broader efforts to bring an end to the conflict that has been ongoing since October 7, 2023, and has led to substantial casualties.

MIT’s involvement was crucial in ensuring coordination with Thai officials, maintaining intelligence diplomacy with Hamas, and overseeing the release process of the five Thai nationals held captive in Gaza.

Beyond the immediate hostage release, MIT has also engaged in extensive humanitarian and diplomatic initiatives aimed at alleviating the suffering caused by the conflict. The agency has assisted in securing the safe passage of Turkish nationals and has worked closely with foreign governments to help release their citizens from the region.

As Türkiye continues its involvement in diplomatic and humanitarian efforts, MIT’s strategic role in Gaza underscores the country’s commitment to peace-building and crisis management in the region.
