Turkish ruling party considers Erdogan's re-nomination for 2027 as snap presidential election looms

02 March 2025 16:58

Deputy chairman of Türkiye's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) Hüseyin Yayman has revealed that the party is considering re-nominating President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for re-election in the snap presidential election set for November 2027.

Speaking at a meeting with AKP members, Yayman expressed strong confidence in Erdoğan's continued leadership, stating, "We hope to nominate our president once again for the election in November 2027. There is no need for another candidate. In the next election, we will once again make our president the head of state", Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.

The deputy chairman highlighted that Erdogan's candidacy will receive full backing from the People's Alliance, a coalition comprising the AKP and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).

Recep Tayyip Erdogan is a prominent Turkish politician who has played a central role in shaping modern Türkiye's political landscape. Erdogan is the leader of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), which he co-founded in 2001. His political career has been marked by significant reforms in the economy, healthcare, and infrastructure.

Under his leadership, Türkiye experienced rapid economic growth, particularly during his early years in power, and Erdogan became a dominant figure in both Turkish and regional politics. In recent years, Erdogan has worked to reshape Türkiye’s political system, transitioning from a parliamentary system to a presidential system with significantly expanded executive powers.
