Election campaigns officially kick off ahead of Chechnya’s vote
Election campaigns for the head of Russia’s Chechen Republic and members of the regional parliament officially began on June 23, according to the republic’s election commission.
The commission said the campaigns commenced after the regional parliament’s decision to schedule the elections was published in the official online newspaper Vesti Respubliki, bringing the decision into force, Russian media reports.
Voters in Chechnya will go to the polls on September 20, Russia’s single voting day, to elect the head of the republic, deputies to the regional parliament, representatives to local municipal bodies, and members of the federal State Duma.
A total of 41 seats in the sixth convocation of the Chechen Parliament will be contested. In addition, 340 seats across municipal councils in 15 districts and the city of Grozny will be filled.
According to the election commission, all municipal elections will be conducted under a proportional representation system, in which seats are allocated based on the share of votes received by political parties.
