Türkiye moves to close school following deadly incident

17 April 2026 17:17

Authorities in Türkiye have decided to close a secondary school in the city of Kahramanmaraş following a deadly armed attack that left 10 people dead.

The decision to shut down Ayser Çalık Secondary School was made after officials reviewed the consequences of the tragedy, Türkiye Gazetesi reports.

The attack, which also left 13 people injured, prompted authorities to assess the future of the institution in light of the severity of the incident.

Students were initially excused from attending classes until April 20. Officials have since moved to transfer them to other schools, with the process already underway. From the next academic period, students will continue their education in other institutions across the region.

Authorities have not yet determined whether the school building will be permanently closed, with a final decision to be made at a later stage.

On April 15, 2026, an armed attack at a secondary school in Kahramanmaraş initially left several people injured, with details unclear in the early hours. As the situation developed, authorities confirmed nine fatalities, including students and a teacher, and multiple injuries.

The attacker, a student at the school, died by suicide. A large-scale investigation was launched, senior officials were dispatched to the scene, and a temporary media blackout was imposed. The incident came a day after a separate school shooting in Şanlıurfa.
