Türkiye reaffirms support for Syria’s sovereignty after Israeli strike
Türkiye will continue to support Syria in protecting its sovereignty, the country’s Defence Ministry has said, following an Israeli strike on a Syrian airbase.
The ministry said the Israeli attack on the Abu al-Duhur airbase in Idlib on August 18 was aimed at undermining Syria’s stability and territorial integrity, Cumhuriyet reports.
“For ensuring peace and stability in Syria and the region, it is critically important that Israel complies with international law,” the ministry said.
It added that Türkiye would support Syria’s efforts to develop its own infrastructure and strengthen its military capabilities under the principle of a unified army.
The ministry also said there had been no Turkish military delegation at the airbase either before or during the Israeli attack.
“The future of the region should not be built on the unilateral use of force, but on a security model based on respect for international law, sovereignty and territorial integrity,” it said.
Türkiye’s Defence Ministry said its priority was to prevent further conflict and instability in the region and establish lasting peace and security.
