Türkiye's defence chief to address Gaza conflict, counter-terrorism at NATO meeting

16 October 2024 19:15

Türkiye's National Defense Minister Yaşar Güler has announced that he will discuss pressing matters during the upcoming NATO defence ministers' meeting, set to take place in Brussels on 17–18 October.

Güler aims to tackle a range of topics, including the ongoing situation in the Gaza Strip, the conflict in Ukraine, and measures to combat terrorism, as well as export restrictions affecting the Turkish defence industry, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

In a statement, Güler emphasised the necessity for NATO members to adopt a decisive stance regarding the immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

“At the meeting, we will underscore the need for participants to take a resolute and clear position to ensure an immediate cessation of hostilities in Gaza, the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid, the release of hostages, and a return to peace negotiations based on the principle of two states,” he stressed.

Additionally, Güler reiterated Türkiye’s unwavering support for Ukraine, particularly concerning its territorial integrity. He remarked, “We will once again highlight our firm support for Ukraine, especially regarding its territorial integrity, and in this context, we will note the importance we attach to security and stability in the Black Sea.”

As the meeting approaches, the focus on these critical issues underscores NATO's ongoing commitment to addressing regional conflicts and enhancing collective security.

Güler confirmed that Türkiye would reaffirm its commitment to the "thorough implementation of the Montreux Convention on the Straits" at the upcoming NATO meeting. He stated that Ankara would also express its "responsible, impartial, and uncompromising support for NATO on defence matters," adding that Türkiye would present its views and assessments regarding efforts to strengthen the alliance's deterrence system.

Counter-terrorism will be one of the primary topics on Türkiye's agenda at the meeting. "We will express our national perspectives and assessments on this issue," Güler said.

"We will emphasise that our counter-terrorism operations in Syria and Iraq are ongoing and resolute, and we will continue them. We also expect decisive support from our allies in the fight against terrorism, including efforts against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and its affiliates."

Güler specifically highlighted the intention to address the issue of export restrictions imposed on Türkiye by several Western nations during discussions at NATO.

Notably, NATO Ministers of Defence will meet at NATO Headquarters in Brussels on October 17-18, 2024. The meeting will be chaired by the NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
