UK, EU draft plan to restore shipping in Hormuz
The United Kingdom and the European Union are developing a joint plan aimed at restoring full freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a statement released by the office of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The announcement, cited by foreign media, followed a phone conversation between Starmer and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, during which both leaders underscored the need for coordinated action among allies.
“Yesterday, the Prime Minister held a conversation with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. <...> They agreed that allies must come together and develop a viable plan to restore full freedom of navigation when circumstances allow,” the statement said.
Beyond maritime security, the two leaders also discussed continued support for Ukraine and efforts to strengthen ties between London and Brussels.
The call came ahead of a security conference focused on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, scheduled to take place on Thursday, April 2, via videoconference. The meeting, which will bring together foreign ministers, is being organized by the UK Foreign Office.
