UK imposes largest sanctions package on Russia, targeting military, mercenary groups
The UK has announced a new wave of sanctions against Russia, marking the largest sanctions package since May 2023.
The 56 new sanctions aim to disrupt the supply of vital military equipment to Russia’s war effort in Ukraine and expose Russian-backed mercenary groups operating in Africa, Caliber.Az reports citing UK Government’s official website.
This latest round of sanctions targets suppliers involved in Russia’s military production, including entities in China, Türkiye, and Central Asia. These suppliers provide critical components such as machine tools, microelectronics, and drone parts—key resources needed for Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
The UK is also taking decisive action against Russian-backed mercenary groups, making it the first G7 country to directly sanction Africa Corps, a group responsible for destabilizing countries across Sub-Saharan Africa. The sanctions also extend to three other private mercenary groups with Kremlin ties, operating in countries like Libya, Mali, and the Central African Republic (CAR). These groups have been linked to human rights abuses, disinformation campaigns, and efforts to exploit Africa’s security vulnerabilities for Russia's gain.
Additionally, the UK is sanctioning 11 individuals associated with Russian proxy forces. These actions are intended to curb Russia’s malign influence and prevent it from undermining peace and security across Africa, where Russia has sought to expand its sphere of influence through corrupt activities and manipulation of local resources.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized that the sanctions would further disrupt Russia's illicit networks, including its shadow fleet and propaganda efforts. The UK’s efforts align with its broader mission to combat Russian malign activity globally and reinforce its support for Ukraine in its struggle for freedom.
This move comes ahead of the European Political Community Summit in Budapest, where Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to discuss continued efforts to counter Russian destabilizing actions across Europe and reaffirm the UK’s commitment to Ukraine.
