UK PM: “We must defeat the poison of antisemitism”
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has condemned a series of recent attacks targeting Jewish communities, describing them as “appalling” and pledging stronger security measures.
According to Caliber.Az, Starmer made the remarks in a post on X, stating:
"The recent attacks targeting Jewish communities are appalling.
We're working closely with the police, security services and CST to protect our Jewish communities, disrupt extremist threats and bring those responsible to justice.
We must defeat the poison of antisemitism.
The Britain that I want is a Britain where people can practice their religion, their faith, in safety and security,"
His comments come amid a string of incidents since late March, including arson attacks targeting Jewish community ambulances in Golders Green, two synagogues, and a former Jewish charity. Another incident involved a drone flown near the Israeli embassy.
On April 18, a synagogue in north-west London was attacked, and a 17-year-old boy has since pleaded guilty to arson not endangering life.
Police have carried out multiple arrests in connection with the incidents. On April 20, a 25-year-old man was arrested in Stevenage, while a 26-year-old man and two women aged 50 and 59 were detained in a car in Birmingham. All remain in custody at a London police station.
In a separate case, a 39-year-old man was arrested in Ealing under the Terrorism Act in connection with an investigation into jars containing a non-hazardous substance discovered in Kensington Gardens on April 17. He also remains in custody.
Authorities have arrested a total of 23 individuals since the first attack targeting locations linked to Jewish communities or those opposed to the Iranian regime.
