UK's Starmer to not set resignation timeline, Lammy says
There will be “no timetable” set out for when UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will resign, a key ally has said amid growing speculation within the Labour Party.
Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy told Sky News that the prime minister remains fully committed to his role and will not step down.
“Let me be really clear. Keir Starmer remains the most resilient person I know in my life. I spoke to him twice yesterday. He has a strength of character and fighting experience. There will be no timetable," he said.
“What there is, is getting on with the business of government. [I'm] really crystal clear about that. At the moment there is no contest. What there is, is his determination to deliver for the British people, accelerate the pace over the coming months. [There's] much to do," he noted.
Pressed on concerns that Starmer has not set out a departure date following calls from 92 Labour MPs, Lammy reiterated: “There will be no timetable for departure.”
