UK to reinstate ban on imports of fuel made from Russian oil
The United Kingdom will reimpose a ban on imports of diesel and jet fuel produced from Russian crude oil in third countries beginning January 1, 2027, according to a license published by the UK Department for Business and Trade.
The move follows a temporary easing of restrictions introduced on May 19, when the UK authorised imports of refined fuel derived from Russian oil. At the time, the government described the license as “open-ended” and subject to periodic review, Caliber.Az reports.
However, in an updated notice issued on June 12, authorities set an expiration date for the authorisation, confirming that the exemption will end on January 1, 2027.
According to the license, the Secretary of State retains the authority to amend, suspend, or revoke the authorisation at any time. The document states that the government will seek to provide four months’ notice before revoking the license.
The decision is part of the UK's broader sanctions framework aimed at reducing economic ties with Russia following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. Restrictions on Russian oil and petroleum products have been a key element of Western efforts to limit Russia’s energy revenues.
