Ukraine ratifies Istanbul Convention
Ukraine has officially handed over the documents on the ratification of the Istanbul Convention to the Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Bjørn Berge.
European Pravda reports referring to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejčinović Burić's Twitter account.
“I warmly welcome the handover by Ukraine of the document on the ratification of the Istanbul Convention today. Ukraine is the 36th state party to this landmark treaty,” the statement says.
As you know, on June 20, the Ukrainian parliament (Verkhovna Rada) ratified the Council of Europe Convention on the Preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention).
On June 21, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed the law on the ratification of the Istanbul Convention.
This decision, which has been delayed for many years - in part because of the position of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches - was especially important for the Netherlands and Sweden, two sceptical countries that eventually agreed to support Ukraine's EU candidate status.
