Ukrainian naval drone found off Greek island triggers investigation
Greek authorities are investigating the discovery of an unmanned Ukrainian naval drone found in waters off the island of Lefkada in the Ionian Sea, officials said on May 8.
The vessel has been identified as a Ukrainian Magura V5 maritime drone after being recovered by fishermen near Cape Doukato and taken to the port of Vasiliki, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Initial inspection indicated the device contained detonators but no explosives, easing early security concerns that prompted the deployment of explosive ordnance disposal teams from the Greek army’s mine clearance unit.
Authorities are examining several possible explanations for its presence in Greek waters, including the possibility it was being used in illicit trafficking operations or had been intended for operations targeting vessels linked to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” which has been used to transport oil in circumvention of Western sanctions.
Officials have not reached any conclusions and stressed that all scenarios remain under investigation.
The drone was reportedly discovered inside a coastal cave with its engine still running and was fitted with communications equipment, including antennas, according to people briefed on the recovery.
The incident comes amid a series of maritime security events involving unmanned systems and commercial shipping in the wider region in recent months.
