UN chief demands Hamas release all hostages in Gaza
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called on the Palestinian movement Hamas to immediately release all hostages held in the Gaza Strip, insisting that no conditions should be attached.
In a statement on X marking the second anniversary of Hamas’s attack on Israel, Guterres described the situation as “a humanitarian catastrophe on a scale that defies comprehension,” Caliber.Az reports.
He added, “End the suffering for all. Put an end to the hostilities in Gaza, Israel, and the region now. Stop making civilians pay with their lives and their futures.”
Guterres stressed the need for hope and action after two years of conflict.
“After two years of trauma, we must choose hope. Now. The recent proposal by the President of the United States presents an opportunity that must be seized to bring this tragic conflict to an end,” he said.
He further emphasised that a “permanent ceasefire and a credible political process are essential to prevent further bloodshed and pave the way for peace,” reaffirming the UN’s commitment to supporting a resolution.
