UN Human Rights Council adopts resolution on Georgia’s occupied territories by consensus

08 October 2025 20:50

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has adopted a resolution on Georgia’s occupied territories, titled “Cooperation with Georgia”, for the first time by consensus.

The resolution, which Georgia has been presenting since 2017, focuses on the human rights situation in territories under Russian occupation, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Georgian Foreign Ministry.

The resolution was presented at the Council session by Georgia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Lasha Darsalia. Its unanimous adoption is being seen as an unprecedented demonstration of international support for Georgia.

The text reaffirms the Council’s commitment to Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders. It expresses serious concern over ongoing human rights violations and discrimination against ethnic Georgians in the Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

The resolution also highlights the continued importance of the Geneva International Discussions, established under the August 12, 2008, ceasefire agreement, as a platform for conflict resolution.

It reiterates references to Russia’s occupation of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and incorporates findings from the European Court of Human Rights covering 2021–2024.

The Council expressed concern that international and regional human rights monitoring mechanisms continue to face restricted access to the occupied territories.

It calls for the immediate and unrestricted entry of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and other international and regional human rights monitoring bodies into Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
