US confident in strong bilateral ties with Türkiye despite BRICS aspirations

The US Embassy in Türkiye has spoken out about Ankara's desire to join BRICS and expressed confidence in the countries' bilateral relations.

According to Michael Goldman, Charge d'Affaires at the US Embassy in Türkiye, Türkiye is a sovereign, independent state and nation that can establish relations with whomever it wants, Caliber.Az reports, citing Turkish media

The envoy said talks are still ongoing between the two sides on technicalities over the production of certain components of the warplanes. On a question over Türkiye’s interest in joining the BRICS, an economic organization led by China and Russia, the envoy said his government has no opinions on this matter.

“We trust in our bilateral relations and defense relations with Türkiye as strong NATO partners,” he stated.

Türkiye’s growing interest in BRICS stems from both political and economic motivations. Politically, BRICS represents the increasing influence of emerging nations, offering a platform for these countries to voice their dissatisfaction with the current global system. The group positions itself as a counterbalance to the West-dominated international order.

As a major regional power, Türkiye’s interest in BRICS aligns with its multi-vector and balanced foreign policy. Joining BRICS could enhance Türkiye’s role as a bridge between the East and West, increasing its strategic importance to both sides.
