Türkiye detains 2013 Reyhanlı bombing mastermind inside Syria PHOTO

13 January 2025 15:16

Muhammed Dib Korali, one of the masterminds behind the 2013 Reyhanlı bombing that claimed 53 lives, has been captured by the Turkish intelligence forces in Syria.

The joint operation was conducted by the Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MİT) in collaboration with the police department of Hatay province, Caliber.Az reports, citing a report by Turkish media.

Korali was identified as a key figure who provided the explosives used in the devastating attack. His involvement in orchestrating the bombing had been established, and an arrest warrant had been issued against him. Through extensive intelligence efforts, MİT was able to locate Korali in Syria.

He was apprehended during a meticulously planned cross-border operation and subsequently handed over to the Hatay provincial police department.

This arrest marks another milestone in efforts to bring justice to the victims of the 2013 attack. In 2018, MİT successfully captured Yusuf Nazik, another fugitive perpetrator of the Reyhanlı bombing, in a similar operation conducted in Syria. Nazik had been instrumental in planning the attack and was extradited to Türkiye to face trial.

The 2013 Reyhanlı bombings were a significant terrorist attack in Türkiye's modern history. On May 11, 2013, two car bombs exploded in the town of Reyhanlı, Hatay Province, near the Syrian border, resulting in 53 fatalities and injuring over 140 individuals. The blasts caused extensive damage, affecting 912 houses, 891 businesses, and 148 vehicles.
