Russian president may visit Hungary for nuclear project
Russian authorities have indicated that President Vladimir Putin might visit Hungary to attend the first concrete pouring ceremony at the Paks-II nuclear power plant.
Alexey Likhachev, Director General of State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom, said that Putin was informed about the proposal to participate and generally supported the idea, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
“I know he discussed it with Orban [Hungarian PM]. Accordingly, we will await decisions from our heads of state,” Likhachev noted.
Preparations for the first concrete pouring began after official construction licences were obtained, with the ceremony planned for early February 2026. The Paks-II project, an expansion of the existing Paks nuclear plant, is being implemented by Rosatom.
It was approved by the Hungarian government in summer 2022 and is cited as one reason Hungary opposes sanctions on Russia’s nuclear sector.
