Russian official dismisses German plan for Ukraine as doomed to failure

13 January 2025 15:09

Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, has dismissed the so-called "German plan" for resolving the Ukraine conflict, describing it as an unworkable proposal.

In a post on his Telegram channel, Medvedev criticized the idea, which suggests a division of Ukraine similar to the division of Germany during the Cold War, with Kyiv becoming the equivalent of West Germany (FRG) and Russian territories in the east resembling East Germany (GDR), Caliber.Az reports.

Medvedev pointed out that this plan, despite its renewed discussion, holds no prospects for success. He argued that the rationale behind the proposal—aiming to bring the leadership of Ukraine's government and its most radical factions into some form of reconciliation—was flawed from the outset. He referred to the plan as a means to placate the "illegitimate" Ukrainian leadership and its extreme nationalist elements, particularly neo-Nazis.

The Russian official further suggested that any viable historical resolution to the conflict would involve the annexation of Ukrainian territories, particularly those he referred to as "Little Russian" lands, into the Russian Federation.

The "German plan" concept has surfaced periodically in discussions about the potential for a negotiated settlement in Ukraine. However, Medvedev’s remarks underscore the Russian government’s rejection of this approach and highlight the deepening division between Russia and Ukraine over the future of the conflict.
