Türkiye, Poland sign defence cooperation agreement
On December 15, a ceremony was held in Ankara to sign an intergovernmental agreement on defence cooperation between Türkiye and Poland.
The document was signed by Turkish National Defence Minister Yaşar Güler and Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Turkish Ministry of National Defence.
Earlier in the day, Türkiye and Poland held negotiations in both narrow and expanded formats, conducted behind closed doors.
While details of the agreement were not disclosed, it was stated that the memorandum aims to enhance defence and military relations between the two countries. It was noted that the parties intend to take existing cooperation within the framework of NATO membership to a higher level.
Officials announced that technical talks regarding the implementation of the agreement will be held in the near future. Defence interactions between Türkiye and Poland are expected to strengthen further with this agreement.
Poland participated in NATO’s Tailored Assurance Measures mission in Türkiye on April 20, 2021, deploying naval aviators and reconnaissance aircraft at Türkiye’s İncirlik Air Base to support alliance security in the eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea, showing practical military collaboration under NATO frameworks.
That same year, Poland became the first NATO ally to purchase Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 drones, marking a notable step in bilateral defence industry ties and signalling mutual strategic interest in modern military systems.
Regular NATO cooperation goes beyond missions and sales: both countries share common security objectives as alliance members, conduct joint exercises and interoperability activities, and have aligned on strengthening deterrence against regional threats through collective defence.
Polish and Turkish defence officials have repeatedly emphasised shared NATO goals and coordinated military relations, reinforced by high‑level visits and strategic dialogue — part of a broader effort to deepen bilateral security cooperation in the face of evolving regional challenges.
