US Congressman introduces bill on annexation and statehood of Greenland
A bill proposing the annexation of Greenland and granting it US statehood has been introduced in the United States Congress, according to documents published on the website of the House of Representatives.
The draft legislation was submitted by Congressman Randy Fine and is titled “The Greenland Annexation and Statehood Act.” The proposal outlines a legal framework that would allow Greenland to be acquired as US territory and eventually admitted as a state.
Commenting on the initiative, Fine argued that Greenland holds strategic importance for US national security. “Whoever controls Greenland controls key Arctic shipping lanes and the security architecture protecting the United States,” he said. He added that Washington cannot leave the island “in the hands of regimes” that, in his view, do not respect US values and seek to undermine American security.
According to the explanatory note attached to the bill, the legislation authorises the US president to take “whatever steps necessary” to acquire Greenland as part of the United States. It also requires the administration to submit a comprehensive report to Congress detailing the legislative changes needed to complete Greenland’s admission as a US state.
The initiative follows recent remarks by US President Donald Trump, who said that the United States would obtain control over Greenland “one way or another.” Trump warned that, if Washington fails to act, other global powers, including China or Russia, could seek influence over the island.
