US pursues its own interests in Venezuela, says Finnish president
Finnish President Alexander Stubb said the United States is actively pursuing its own interests in Venezuela as part of its new national security strategy, speaking at a press conference in Paris on January 6.
Stubb noted that Venezuela is just one example of how this policy is being implemented, Caliber.Az reports, citing Finnish media.
He acknowledged that the administration of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro has been harsh and undemocratic.
In Stubb’s view, Washington is now focused exclusively on its own regional interests. “And now it is implementing this policy in Venezuela,” the president emphasised.
The leader stressed the importance of looking at the broader picture, warning that disregard for international law in one region can lead to unpredictable consequences elsewhere.
“At the same time, we need to step back from minor details and look at the situation as a whole. Disregard for international law in one place leads to the same elsewhere. The ripple effects of cases like Venezuela can be enormous and unpredictable. We are moving toward a more dangerous world,” Stubb said.
The Finnish president also called for a return to the core principles of international law, including respect for state sovereignty, territorial integrity, and human rights.
