US senator fights Trump’s education cuts in bold "save our schools" campaign
Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) has launched a new campaign, "Save Our Schools," in response to President Donald Trump and Education Secretary Linda McMahon’s efforts to dismantle the US Department of Education.
Speaking to US media, Warren condemned the federal government's proposed changes, stating that they threaten public education and disproportionately benefit the wealthiest Americans, Caliber.Az reports.
The Massachusetts senator highlighted her concerns over the potential consequences, such as teacher layoffs and larger class sizes, particularly affecting students with special needs. Warren also criticised the administration's plan to shift student services to other departments, including Health and Human Services, claiming it would deprive vulnerable students of vital support.
As part of her campaign, Warren is gathering stories from teachers, students, and parents to illustrate the impact of these changes. She has also vowed to launch federal investigations and legal actions to protect public education.
Despite the political challenges, with Democrats in the minority in Congress, Warren is determined to push back against the proposed reforms through oversight, investigations, and lawsuits.
The Trump administration’s efforts to cut the department have already resulted in significant layoffs, with hundreds of workers from the Federal Student Aid Office let go last month. Warren and other Democrats argue this could severely disrupt the student loan system, which supports millions of borrowers.
The campaign has already sparked legal action, with various states and civil rights groups, including unions in Massachusetts, challenging the administration’s plans in court.
