What does the US aim to tempt Hezbollah with? Intriguing deal for border security
Details have emerged about an upcoming agreement the USA is advocating to engage Hezbollah in removing its troops from the Israeli border and maintaining peace in the region.
According to Al Akhbar, the matter was discussed in a recent meeting between the US special envoy to the Middle East, Amos Hochstein, and Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mukati.
The newspaper reported that the proposed arrangements bear some resemblance to Israel's well-known strategy of making concessions to Hamas, which received financial support from Qatar in exchange for maintaining peace. However, in this case, the USA aims to offer Lebanon a gas pipeline from Egypt through Syria and unlimited electricity from Jordan, which would be a valuable resource for a country facing continuous crisis.
Lebanese Energy Minister Walid Fayad informed Al Akhbar that the US-funded initiative, backed by the World Bank, is still being considered and appears to be feasible. Additionally, the parties are discussing a large-scale reconstruction project in southern Lebanon. Of course, the success of this project hinges on sustained peace and quiet along the Israeli border.
