Will war and corruption allegations cost Netanyahu another term?

27 June 2026 22:07

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing what analysts describe as the greatest political challenge of his long career ahead of a general election scheduled for October, with mounting pressure over regional conflicts, strained ties with Washington and ongoing corruption charges.

Netanyahu, Israel's longest-serving prime minister, enters the campaign amid criticism over his handling of wars in Lebanon and Iran, as well as public anger over the government's response to the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks.

Political analyst Nimrod Flaschenberg told Al Jazeera that Netanyahu may be facing serious difficulties. "It looks like [Netanyahu] might be in real trouble," he said, pointing to public uncertainty over developments in Lebanon and growing concerns about Israel's dependence on US support.

The election comes as Israel remains embroiled in conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon. Netanyahu has come under pressure from both sides of the political spectrum, with some right-wing supporters demanding a more aggressive military campaign while others favour ending the fighting.

Relations with the United States have also become increasingly complicated. President Donald Trump has pushed for regional de-escalation and reportedly expressed frustration with Israel's actions in Lebanon. According to media reports cited by Al Jazeera, Trump has insisted that Netanyahu respect Washington's ceasefire arrangements linked to a broader understanding with Iran.

Former Israeli government adviser Daniel Levy said Netanyahu is likely concerned about his standing with the White House. "That's going to worry Netanyahu," Levy said. "Right now, he's probably angling for another meeting."

At home, Netanyahu continues to face criticism for refusing to establish an independent inquiry into the government's handling of the October 2023 attacks. His administration has also faced growing international scrutiny over Israel's military operations in Gaza and Lebanon.

Meanwhile, the prime minister remains on trial in a corruption case dating back to 2019. A conviction could have significant legal and political consequences.

Former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, widely seen as Netanyahu's main challenger, has criticised the government's strategy in Lebanon, arguing that Israel failed to translate military gains into lasting political achievements.

With wars abroad, legal challenges at home and uncertainty over relations with Washington, the October election could prove decisive for Netanyahu's political future and legacy.
