Yerevan court sentences Masis mayor to 6 years in prison
The mayor of Masis, an Armenian city, David Ambartsumyan, has been sentenced to six years and three months in prison, said his lawyer, Tigran Atanesyan.
Armenian media reported on the sentencing, which was delivered by the Criminal Court of Yerevan. The court revoked Ambartsumyan’s bail and ordered his detention as a preventive measure, Caliber.Az reports.
“Atanesyan stated that the court pronounced a verdict sentencing the head of the Masis community and prime ministerial candidate, David Ambartsumyan, to six years and three months of imprisonment,” the report noted.
The mayor of Masis faced charges related to the use of weapons against demonstrators and the orchestration of civil unrest in 2018. The initial case pertained to an assault on protestors at the junction of the villages Hayanist and Hovtashat, while the subsequent case involved disturbances in the Erebuni administrative district of Yerevan.
