Zelenskyy, Trudeau discuss enhanced support for Ukraine, sanctions on Russia Ahead of G7 Summit
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has held discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ahead of Canada’s upcoming presidency of the G7.
"I thanked Prime Minister Trudeau and the Canadian people for their unwavering support, particularly the critical defence aid, such as NASAMS," Zelenskyy stated, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
He also shared that during the conversation, they addressed key priorities, including strengthening sanctions against Russia, especially targeting its propaganda networks and shadow fleet.
"I also proposed increasing funding for the production of Ukrainian weaponry and exploring opportunities for localizing the manufacture of certain types of arms.
Close coordination with allies is of utmost importance to ensure a strong position for Ukraine and to achieve lasting peace and security for all," the Ukrainian leader emphasized.
To recap, on June 13, 2024 Canada announced the latest new sanctions under the Special Economic Measures (Russia) Regulations, coordinated with international partners at the G7 Summit in Italy.
The measures target individuals and entities involved in disinformation and propaganda, as well as those in Russia’s military-industrial complex supporting the war effort. Sanctions also aim at entities facilitating sanctions evasion, particularly those helping Russia access goods or revenue from oil sold above the G7 price cap.
The sanctions include export prohibitions on computer numerically controlled machine tools that could aid Russia’s weapons production. These actions align Canada with other nations implementing Tier IV (B) restrictions.
Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly emphasized that these sanctions are part of Canada’s ongoing support for Ukraine, aimed at limiting Russia’s military capabilities and undermining its disinformation campaigns.
Since January 2022, Canada has committed over $14 billion in aid to Ukraine.
