Iran summons Norwegian, UK, Swedish envoys over attacks on embassies
REGION 25 September 2022 - 16:59
Iran has summoned Sweden's charge d'affaires and ambassadors of the UK and Norway to Tehran over the latest attacks on the Iranian embassies, Iranian news sources report.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned Sweden's charge d'affaires over an attack on the Iranian embassy in Stockholm on September 23, Caliber.Az reports citing Tasnim News Agency.
The Swedish envoy was summoned in the absence of the country's ambassador in Tehran by the Foreign Ministry's chief of protocol.
During the meeting, the strong protest of Iran was conveyed to the Swedish government over the violent attack and the failure of the Swedish police to take timely and adequate security measures in accordance with the Vienna Convention.
The Swedish charge d’affaires expressed regret over the incident and stated that he would convey the issue to the Stockholm government.
Also, following a similar attack against the Iranian embassy in Brussels by a number of hostile elements, the Foreign Ministry and the Iranian embassy in Brussels lodged the Islamic Republic’s strong protest with the Belgian Foreign Ministry and reiterated the responsibility of the government of the European country to protect diplomatic venues in accordance with the Vienna Convention.
Following the interventionist statements of the speaker of the Norwegian Parliament about developments in Iran, the Norwegian ambassador to Tehran was also summoned to the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Mehr reports.
During the meeting, Iran's strong protest was conveyed to the Norwegian envoy.
The non-constructive statements of the Norwegian Parliament speaker about the recent riots in Iran are considered interference in the internal affairs of the country.
The Norwegian ambassador also said at this meeting that he will convey Tehran's message as soon as possible.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry has also summoned UK’s ambassador to Tehran to express Tehran’s protest over hostile attempts by London-base Persian-language television channels to further instigate deadly riots that have erupted in several Iranian cities over the death of a young woman, who died at the hospital a few days after collapsing at a police station in the capital Tehran, Mehr adds.
"In response to the hostile atmosphere being created by the London-based Farsi-language media outlets against the Islamic Republic of Iran, the UK ambassador [Simon Shercliff] was summoned on September 24 by the foreign ministry’s Director General for Western Europe," the ministry said in a statement.
It added that a strongly-worded note of protest was lodged to the UK diplomat over London's hosting the media, which have fiercely sought in recent days to provoke protests and incite riots against the Iranian government.
The statement went on to stress that such bids amount to interference in Iran’s internal affairs and violate the country’s national sovereignty.
Violent protests have broken out in several Iranian cities over the September 16 death of Mahsa Amini, a young Iranian woman who died at the hospital days after collapsing at a police station in the capital Tehran, where she and a group of others were receiving educational training on dress code rules.
Despite Iranian officials' clarification on the circumstances surrounding Amini's death, violent street protests have led to attacks on security officers and acts of vandalism against public property and sanctities.
