Indonesia earthquake death toll rises to 318
The death toll from the 5.1 magnitude earthquake that hit Indonesia's West Java Province at the beginning of the week has reached 318.
This announcement came from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) of the country on November 27, the Chinese CGTN reported.
Earlier, information was received about 310 victims but according to NDMA, since then the bodies of eight more dead have been found. There are 14 people that still remain missing.
More than 7,700 people were reportedly been injured with over 73,000 still unable to return to their homes due to the consequences of the natural disaster.
Caliber.Az recalls, that an earthquake struck the island of Java on November 21. The epicentre was 74 km southeast of the capital Jakarta. According to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the origin was at a depth of 5 km.
Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis are common in Indonesia due to fault lines in the Pacific Basin, making the country one of the most active seismic regions in the world. One of the worst recorded natural disasters in modern history hit the country in 2004, when a powerful earthquake and thereafter following tsunami killed almost 230,000 people.
