Assassination attempt made on Azerbaijani MP in front of his house

Azerbaijani MP Fazil Mustafa was shot in front of his house in Baku on March 28, AzTV reports.

The MP received two gunshot wounds on his leg and shoulder. He was hospitalized. His condition is assessed as satisfactory, and there is no threat to his life.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs dispatched an operational-search group to the scene. The suspect in the incident has been put on the wanted list.

The ministry's Spokesperson Ehsan Zahidov said necessary investigative and search activities are currently being carried out by the police and the prosecutor's office.

Deputy Chairman of the Azerbaijani Parliament Adil Aliyev called the incident a "serious terrorist attack".

“The occurrence of such an incident against a deputy is a matter of national security. You can be sure that serious measures will be taken by the state,” he said.

In the meantime, the State Security Service of Azerbaijan initiated a criminal case under Article 277 (attempt on the life of a statesman or public figure with the aim of terminating his official or political activity or revenge for this activity) and Article 228.2.1 (illegal acquisition, storage, transportation and carrying of firearms, their components, ammunition by a group of persons who have previously entered into an agreement) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

According to the Service, urgent operational and investigative measures are being carried out to identify and bring to justice the person who committed the terrorist act and other persons related to the commission of the crime.
