Flights from Baku rerouted mid-air as Persian Gulf airspace closes
On June 23, 2025, several international flights departing from Baku’s Heydar Aliyev International Airport were forced to land at alternate airports after temporary airspace restrictions were imposed over the Persian Gulf.
According to a report by Caliber.Az, citing Heydar Aliyev International Airport, the affected flights were unable to reach their intended destinations and were rerouted for safety reasons.
Among the diverted flights was a Qatar Airways service from Baku to Doha and a Kuwait Airways flight en route to Kuwait, both of which were redirected to Jeddah International Airport in Saudi Arabia. Additionally, a Wizz Air Abu Dhabi flight from Baku to Abu Dhabi was diverted to Medina International Airport.
The airport authorities noted that the situation was swiftly evaluated in line with international aviation security protocols, and all necessary measures were taken to ensure the safety of passengers and crew on board the affected flights.
