Russian court again extends detention of US reporter accused of espionage

29 November 2023 08:04

The detention of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich in Moscow has yet again been extended until January.

This follows from the latest court ruling, as Reuters reported on the 32-year-old's case, who was arrested in March on espionage charges.

He has has had his detention extended multiple times.

The charges carry a potential sentence of up to 20 years.

According to Russia's Federal Security Service, the charges against him carry a 20-year old prison sentence and he is being accused of "acting on the instructions of the American side, collected information constituting a state secret about the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex".

The court hearings have been held behind closed doors, and Russia has not publicly presented evidence to support the accusations against Gershkovich.

His employer, the Wall Street Journal has called for his immediate release, while Moscow has stated it would consider an exchange only after the trial concludes.
