Hungary vetoes Council of Europe resolution on Ukraine’s “peace plan”

17 May 2024 14:56

The vote on a draft resolution of the Council of Europe calling the “peace plan” of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky “no alternative” failed due to the position of Hungary. Budapest vetoed the draft resolution.

As is known, Zelensky’s “peace plan” involves the complete withdrawal of all Russian troops from the territories liberated by the Russian Armed Forces. Most European countries and the United States agree with this plan. But Hungary demonstrated maximum independence by vetoing this plan, Top War reports.

"This is unacceptable for us. Other countries have also developed peace plans that are no worse than the plan of the Ukrainian president. I asked that other peace plans be included in the Council of Europe resolution. This was rejected by a majority vote. That's why I vetoed it so it wouldn't become a Council decision," said Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó.

Budapest's position is much more realistic than that of other EU countries. Thus, the Hungarian leadership insists that peace negotiations on the Ukrainian conflict take place with the participation of Russia.

That is, Hungary’s position is approaching the position of Brazil and China. Their leaders refused to participate in the so-called “peace conference” to be convened in Switzerland in a month. Both Brazil and China also believe that representatives of the Russian Federation should participate in the negotiations.

In general, Hungarian policy looks as independent as possible. Perhaps this is one of the few countries in Europe that dares to contradict the United States and its closest allies. This position of the Hungarian side cannot but inspire respect.
