Armenia calls for extension of EU mission’s mandate
Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan has said that Armenia advocates for the extension of the EU mission monitoring the situation along the border with Azerbaijan.
Mirzoyan made these remarks during a parliamentary session, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
"As far as I know, the EU is considering extending the mission's mandate. From our perspective, until we have a signed peace agreement with Azerbaijan and a finalized border demarcation process, as well as stability and long-term peace, we have concerns about Azerbaijan's actions. Therefore, we deem the presence of the EU monitoring mission essential," he stated.
On December 11, 2023, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell announced that EU foreign ministers had decided to increase the number of EU observers in Armenia from 138 to 209.
He said that this expansion of the mission will serve as a means to enhance stability along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.
